50×70 Gallery Wrapped Abstract Canvas Painting

Howdy from Joi at the Ranch!

This 24″x36″ wrapped canvas was done with the STAMPENDOUS Blog Hop in mind for Andy Skinner’s new line of stamps.  Andy is Executive Creative Consultant for DecoArt Inc., as well as a product designer for Stampendous.

Just Image….
Once Upon A Future Time… in another time warp far, far away…
there was an Unexplained Mysterious Planetary Realm that the astronauts only shared with very special friends.  It was the ultimate dream vacation – a secret hideaway.  However… every visitor was frightened by the unknown so they were always told… “Have Faith”… it will be worth the trip.
Would you like to go??

Here are Andy’s NEW Stampendous Stamp Sets that were used in this project as well as some of Andy’s DecoArt Stencils that you will see in the step by step process photos below.

YES… I agree with you… this is a wild and crazy creation for me! It was great fun to do though with a huge variety of mixed media fluid acrylic paints and texture products from DecoArt Media.  I also used Dynasty Brushes and Faber-Castell Pitt Pens.

STEP by STEP Tutorial
The first thing done was just pulling out all the stamp sets and stamping – then fussy cutting!  That helped me know what size canvas was going to be needed for the project.

I placed the grungy heart stamp pieces to form a flower and drew around them to get the idea of the size of the planets.  Using black and white gesso – the planets began to form!
DecoArt Snow Writer Dimensional Paint was the perfect texture for the planetary background.  After it was dry, it was covered with DecoArt Media Liquid Glass.

Using the stamped and fussy cut barbed wire branch stamp and Matte Medium… the roots of the flower were formed.

Burnt Umber Fluid Acrylic was added in and around the roots.  They were then covered with crackle glaze.

Then began the fun part because I love playing with the DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic vivid colors. With no preconceived ideas… I just began painting!

Below is a photo of how the background looked after the first layer of paints. Then how it looked after the last layer was done.

Here is what it looked like at the end of the first go round of paint layers – just getting everything started.

There is a place for five of the winged heart creatures flying here and there around the planets.

Honestly, I have no idea what was in my mind when I drew this pointed mountain. Just playing with design and dimension.

Adding the Modeling Paste to make it look unique.

After playing with colors, I added some of Andy’s “eyes” looking out from inside the mountain – ehehehhehe! Wild and Crazy!!! The stencil is ‘Strike the Pose’ by DecoArt and Andy Skinner.
On the other side – opposite the pointed mountain, I used Texture Sand Paste to make a smaller mountain range.  It’s a GREEN Planet so it needs lots of interesting places for anyone that might visit it!!

I forgot to include the bottle but DecoArt Weathered Wood Crackle Medium was added to the planet surface around the “roots”.

Some Texture Sand Paste and Black Gesso helped with adding more texture to the large planet at the top of the canvas.

Crackle Paste – so yummy – for the “pink” planet!

After the Weather Wood was dry the Green Gold Fluid Acrylic made the Green Planet come to life!

Andy’s ‘Incognito’ Stencil by DecoArt was added to the planet above the large mountain.

Finally – time for the REAL stamping of the figures.  Wasn’t sure what color everything would turn out in the beginning.  All of the stamping was done on tissue paper.  All the cut out stamped images where applied to the canvas with DecoArt Media Matte Medium.

Also, added some texture to some of the planets and to the red area where the words would be seen.

And here are some close-ups of the finished piece.

So happy you stopped by to visit my imaginary planetary world!
And by the way… no – I would not like to go to the unknown.
But I do so enjoy creating it!!!
